The Ruskin School of Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Vera Mey as Associate Professor of Contemporary Art History & Theory and a Fellow of St Catherine's College. The selection process brought together an outstanding group of candidates, and we are thrilled to welcome Vera to the Ruskin!
Dr Vera Mey is an art historian and curator from Aotearoa New Zealand, holding a PhD in History of Art & Archaeology from SOAS University of London (2024), where her research explored critical regionalism in Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art. Her scholarship focuses on art and anticapitalism, mid-twentieth-century liberation movements, and transnational artistic practices, alongside an active international curatorial career. She was Co-Artistic Director of the 2024 Busan Biennale and has curated major exhibitions including SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now (2017), while also co-founding the journal Southeast of Now. Previously holding academic positions at the Royal College of Art, Manchester School of Art, and the University of York, she is currently based at Oxford and co-editing Against Imperialism: On the Threshold of a Post-Capitalist World (forthcoming 2027).
Vera Mey's work at the Ruskin will focus primarily on our new Master’s degree in Contemporary Art History and Theory, launching in October 2027. She will also teach across the MFA and BFA programmes and be available for DPhil supervision.
