Berlin has gained a reputation over the past twenty years as Europe’s creative hub, the city to which prospective artists and bohemians have moved in search of inspiration. Like Paris at the end of the nineteenth century and New York in the middle of the twentieth century, Berlin has gained a near-mythical status as the city in which to find oneself as an artist, and to make one’s name.

The book Mythos Berlin aims to document and analyse this phenomenon through a series of essays, interviews, case studies and the reproduction of selected works of art. The mythology of Berlin is contrasted with the experiences of artists, gallerists and writers who have lived in the city over the past twenty years. Mythos Berlin collects critical and documentary accounts of an extraordinary period in a reborn city, exploring its lasting impact on contemporary culture.
