Ruskin alumni: Holly Graham (BFA 2012, St Hugh's College), Kinga Lubowiecka (BFA 2011,St Hugh's College) and Milly Peck (BFA 2012, St Edmund Hall) show they work at the Greenroom in Cracow, Poland as part of the Cracow Gallery Weekend KRAKERS.
In today’s western culture the term “flat-pack” usually references consumer items, most commonly furniture that can be bought ‘flat’ and ‘packed’ in cardboard boxes, ready to assemble at home. The same items can be bought in countries spanning from Eastern through to Western Europe thanks to large retailers. In this way the boundaries between cultures, as well as aesthetic taste are becoming blurred and no longer so easily definable. Could the same be said of the art- object?
The exhibition “Flat pack” will take the form of a “pop-up” show, which can be easily assembled and disassembled in several locations. It will bring together works by three up- and-coming British artists working across a variety of visual media - painting and sculpture, printmaking and photography. In their practices the artists - Holly Graham, Kinga Lubowiecka and Milly Peck, employ shared aesthetic approaches to making. They are all “assemblers”, building and constructing their works from several elements. The context of their work however, varies depending on each artist’s cultural heritage, whether this be Caribbean, Polish or English. Hence, the show will be an opportunity to examine not only the boundaries between visual media, but its cultural significance as well.
