Ruskin DPhil Yuval Etgar curates ‘The Ends of Collage’, a two-part exhibition in New York and London

'The Ends of Collage' at Luxembourg & Dayan, is a project across three platforms, and opens in New York on 27 February, with part two opening in London on 9 March. The exhibition features work by Jean (Hans) Arp, Giacomo Balla, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Mark Flood, Jack Goldstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Lee Krasner, Louise Lowlier, Sherrie Levine, Linder, Rene Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, and John Stezaker.

Yuval Etgar, a doctoral candidate in Contemporary Art History and Theory at the Ruskin, states: “In a time where the term ‘cut and paste’ refers more often to allegorical and digital operations than to the use of scissors and glue, it seems imperative to go back and examine the technical invention that lies on the historical seam between pictures and images, between manual craft and the mediated reality of our time.”

The Ends of Collage, refers both literally and metaphorically to the place where collage fulfils its calling — at the ends or edges of pictures and fragments, where separate worlds come together or break apart from one another. But it also suggests an historical paradigm, where collage is considered as a medium that existed in the so called ‘age of mechanical reproduction’ and has now been overcome by the new logic of the digital age.

The third element, an anthology of historical and theoretical essays on the theme of collage, will accompany the exhibition and be available at the gallery - Luxembourg & Dayan, 2 Savile Row, London W1S 3PA.

There will also be a panel discussion at Luxembourg & Dayan, London on Tuesday 14 March, 6pm. Speakers will include Linder Sterling, John Stezaker, and David Campany.
