Tony Grisoni’s Prime Cuts

Tony Grisoni was involved in many different areas of film making before turning to screenwriting. Queen of Hearts (1989), directed by Jon Amiel, was his award-winning first feature. Since then he has worked closely with numerous directors, including John Boorman, Terry Gilliam and Michael Winterbottom.

Vanished! – A Video Séance (1999) was made in collaboration with poet, sculptor and performance artist Brian Catling. Jonathan Romney, writing for the Guardian, referred to the piece as ‘genre busting - an encounter between mainstream movie storytelling and the art avant-garde’.

In 2001 Tony Grisoni and Michael Winterbottom made the trek along the people smugglers’ route from the Pakistan-Afghan border through Iran and Turkey to Europe. The resulting film In This World (2002) featured in the London Film Festival and won the Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2003.

Recently completed films include The Cutting (2005), a film with Brian Catling based on the finding of the 2,000 year old Grauballe Man in Denmark, Tideland (2005), an adaptation of Mitch Cullin’s book about a modern Alice directed by Terry Gilliam, and Brothers of the Head (2005), adapted from the Brian Aldiss novel about the rise and fall of ‘Siamese Twin Rockers’ Tom and Barry Howe.

Tony Grisoni presented eight of his own and other films at a two-day event in Oxford, which took place at Magdalen College, Oxford on 10 and 11 February 2005, and the programme concluded with a discussion featuring contributions by artist Brian Catling, the editor of Vertigo magazine Gareth Evans, independent producer Caroline Freeman and filmmaker Joost Hunningher.

Organised by the Ruskin School of Art in association with Magdalen College Film Society and supported by funding from Arts Council England.
