Jake Tilson: Thecooker

Jake Tilson was the first artist-in-residence at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art. During his residency he was introduced to a range of organisations that had an association with the internet at a stage when it first acquired the capacity to support a range of digital media.

Rooted in everyday culture and a pervading sense of place, Tilson’s practice spans publishing, cultural commentary, photography and audio work and often focuses on the unremarkable and the everyday whilst purposefully avoiding any sense of spectacle. In Oxford Tilson became curious about the art and design potential of the new information and communications technology and rapidly developed a body of graphical work, unparalleled in Britain at the time, including a website calledthecooker.

thecooker was shortlisted for the best designed website by Yellow Pages in 1996 and has since featured in numerous books and magazine articles.

Commissioned by the Ruskin School of Art in association with True-D Software and Milo Hedge and supported by funding from the Erna Plachte Memorial Fund.
