Z Forbes

Z’s sculptural practice is guided by the principle that all artists are labourers and all labourers are artists. Referring back to endangered British craft and labour industries, they use motifs from gothic masonry and woodworking rendered In contemporary industrial materials and emergent digital technologies. Through the use of polyurethane foam, eco-resin and other modern materials, they make facades of recognisable vestiges -medieval windows, grotesques and casks-  from a time in which these labours were a sacred act. In doing so attention is drawn to how anachronistic aesthetic, thoughtful labour has become. Z’s work seeks to understand the place of the new British craftsman and artist, by questioning what has been lost by a society that no longer privileges the act of making.
