Kai Yan Cheung

Kai Yan Cheung explores the sensory, material and spiritual translations of nature within urban environments. Working primarily with wood, silver and eco-resin, her interactive sculptures and installations serve as mediators between human bodies and the subtle presences of the more-than-human world.

A seed falling from a tree. The flicker of a leaf across water. Cheung materialises these fleeting encounters in response to the age-old riddle: If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Her practice invites gestures of perceptive attention and responsiveness, tending to ecological urgency through wonder, play, and meditation. She continually asks: If nature is already speaking, are we capable of listening?

Raised in Hong Kong and Beijing, Cheung’s experience of nature was informed by its urban expressions. Her practice reflects this entanglement, tracing moments of reciprocity as part of a search for felt connection and care for the natural world. She holds a BA (First Class Honours) in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and previously worked in jewellery design before pursuing her MFA at the University of Oxford. She is currently based in London.
