Kian Swingler (b. 2004), He/Him
Kian captures his memories through a variety of mediums. Ranging from the grains in found wood, rocks, and shells, photography, and digital spaces. All of these become memorabilia for him.
Memories are vital to Kian’s practice, capturing almost every moment of significance to him and his family. He organises them meticulously, placing each one into jars within his mind. Physically, this manifests through him reliving those memories using his associated memorabilia. Hoping the wood gives back a landscape, a story, a figure or something that reflects the contents of the jar—a tree in the distance, a chameleon absorbed into wood, a house completely made of wood and rocks for him and his partner.
Kian relives the bliss, the annoyance, the arguments, the sadness, the beauty, of all his memories to create an evocative sense of place within his works. Hoping the viewer becomes immersed within the scenes and relate to them with their own memories and stories.
