Hal Darling (b.2003) is a painter, costume-designer and prop-maker who delights in the transformative power of camp. He believes costume loosens the rules we set ourselves and offers an alternative world of free revelry and joyous ridicule. He seeks to capture this world in painting and thus invites all to join the clownery.
Hal exorcises their queer insecurity through bad counterfeits and repetitive labour, hand carving and printing decks of cards and the detritus of parties, aiming to fail just a little. This way they repeat the work of self creation, and find joy in the inevitable failure of being a man. The same is achieved through painting; by recreating his own memories Hal finds use for the unreliability they fear in themself and seeks the divine silly.
