Freya Foster (b. 2003, Sheffield) is interested in the structures in painting that delimit and articulate internal space, made visible but just beyond reach. She uses painting to explore the relationship between material and illusion in depiction. The desire for immersion takes us to the edges of ourselves but experience is contained beneath the skin; forms emerge from the painting but are always bound to the texture of the physically constructed surface. Freya often turns to seventeenth-century Dutch interior paintings for the perspective they offer on thresholds and boundaries.
