Caroline Vitzthum

Caroline Vitzthum is an interdisciplinary artist working in performance, photography, field research and film. Her work engages with the biology, ecology and cultural histories of plants. Vitzthum generates discursive spaces with communities, institutions, and scientists to address climate change. Her particular interest in bryology and peatland conservation is explored in the work titled Speaking Sphagnum, a project developed in partnership with the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Coming to peatland conservation from a background in bespoke tailoring, she is interested in the interlacing of multispecies relationships, experienced through ecological processes and a microscopic lens. Vitzthum is working towards a public-engagement programme and exhibition at Oxford Botanic Garden & Arboretum planned for June 2024.

Caroline Vitzthum has gained her first degree at a traditional bespoke tailoring school in Vienna, followed by a one-year masterclass specialised on haute couture tailoring. In 2020, she completed her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Arts Practice at Bath Spa University and was subsequently awarded a 12-month Graduate Fellowship at Spike Island gallery in Bristol. She is the recipient of the 2022/23 Slade Bursary, awarded by the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford.
