Heather Carter

My practice is a continuous exploration of the bodily, both the inside and the out, that finds its core in meditative moments and reflections on my experience of existing within my own. Blind, automatic and intuitive drawing styles enable me to primarily explore the human form in a way not dictated by sight, but feeling and tactility. I often draw and re-draw multiple versions of myself in pieces to encourage familiarity and oneness with my own physicality, further adding to how these methods of mark-making open up a way of thinking about the body that we often loose touch with in the busyness of everyday.

The instinctual and abstracted forms that make up my works are the products of applying these processes to fabrics, papers and the human body itself. Alongside mark-making, my practice looks at mixed media through draping, layering and installation, as ways to further emulate aspects of bodily forms, with skin, vein structures and musculature inspiring the colours and textures involved. Such installations are also often re-configured again and again to echo the ever-changing feelings and experiences of living in our bodies.
