Emer Sukonik

Emer’s interdisciplinary work is a pursuit of garish colour and nonsensical narrative. Recent objects such as a malevolent platform heel, a gaping checkerboard mouth pond and a befanged moon, play games with the tropes of painting by extending these into the realm of sculpture. Small, seemingly wacky thoughts often reveal more complex and loaded narratives that Emer explores through these objects, keeping them alive through storytelling. The use of the body and its physicality has predominantly defined her latest series of paintings – Welcome to the New Issue – exploring how the body is employed in painting in terms of speed, scale, and gesture, pushing the physicality of painting to relate it back to object-making and her roots in dance.
