Life Drawing - term-time classes

The Ruskin offers three courses in life drawing each Oxford academic term, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings. The courses for Michaelmas term are now fully booked and the waiting lists are oversubscribed.

The Ruskin welcomes artists who wish to learn about life drawing from tutors at the University’s Fine Art department.

These courses are open to those who are seeking to develop their technical skills and be guided in the process of observation by an experienced artist.  No specific qualification is required to attend any course.

Each term, there are 3 courses available, two for members of the University and one for non-members of the University.

The courses run from Week 1 to Week 8 of each Univerisity of Oxford term (see here for term dates).  Bookings can be made via the University's online store  The courses will not be visible or accessible on the online store until two weeks before the start of each term.  Places cannot be reserved in advance, but are booked on a first-come, first-served basis; these courses are always very popular and places sell-out quickly..

For Members of the University

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, we offer two term-long courses for staff, students and alumni of Oxford University from 5.30 - 8.30 pm, at 74 High Street.  A maximum of 16 participants work with a life model and are guided by a tutor.

The Wednesday evening class is taught by Francis Hamel and Roger Wagner, and is intended for the intermediate and advanced artist or for those who have already completed one term of life classes at the Ruskin.

The Thursday evening class will be taught by an experienced life-drawing tutor (in Michaelmas term with Weimin He, in Hilary Term tbc), and is open to artists of all abilities. (We are sad to announce that the Ruskin's previous tutor of the Thursday evening class, Rebecca Hind, died in July 2017, following a period of illness).

If you book on either of these courses, it is necessary to present your University of Oxford or Alumni card.  Unfortunately we cannot guarantee a place for these evening courses without this confirmation.  If you need to arrange for an alumni card, or replace a lost card, please click here.

The Ruskin will provide easels, drawing boards, cartridge paper, and a life model.  Please bring along whatever materials you wish to work with e.g. pencils/charcoal etc, and clips for attaching your work to the drawing boards, or masking tape, and an eraser.

For Non-Members of the University

A life drawing course for non-members of the University is available on Saturday mornings with Weimin He at 74 High Street from 9.15 am - 12.15pm.

For each class, the Ruskin provides easels, drawing boards, cartridge paper, and a life model.  Please bring along whatever materials you wish to work with e.g. pencils/charcoal etc, and clips for attaching your work to the drawing boards, or masking tape, and an eraser.
