Justine Varga

Justine Varga is an artist critically engaged with the medium of photography. While reading for a DPhil in Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art and The Queen’s College, her practice-led research will focus on what can be gained by looking at photography from and within the medium’s margin.

Varga has exhibited her work in numerous public institutions in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She is the recipient of several juried awards, including the Olive Cotton Award for Photographic Portraiture in 2017, and the 21st Dobell Prize for Drawing in 2019. Varga is a regular contributor to scholarly conversations on the place of photography in contemporary art and frequently delivers public papers, most recently at the University of Lisbon (2022), University of Westminster (2023), and University of Sydney (2023). She is a significant contributor to a special issue of the Swedish journal OEI: Photography on Edge (2024), and her work has been included in published histories of photography, such as Installation View: Photography Exhibitions in Australia 1848 - 2020, and Negative/Positive: A History of Photography (both 2021).
