William Amber Rankin Anne

My work plays with the idea of aesthetics through contrast and contradiction. I develop relationships and a unity between materials and colours which would not normally be associated together, breaking down matter and form to release colour and texture. Through this dematerialisation, I give autonomy, presence, and meaning to colours and materials. They gain their own identity away from their everyday associations.

I use a range of media, including commercial materials such as glitter, spray paint, and carpets, and often incorporate the fluidity of line and drawing within these materials. I am drawn to the complex beauty and character which lies in the disjunction and contrast between the colours and materials in my work. The viewer becomes immersed in the materiality of colour which radiates beyond the sculptural elements in my pieces. I do not try and subtract colour from form, instead I use the role of form to give a presence to colour; its autonomy rests in the dematerialisation of the object.
